Welcome to Elizabeth Wyn Wood Alternate High School
The Elizabeth Wyn Wood Secondary Alternate Program offers a unique and supportive learning environment designed to help students earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) through a flexible, one-course-at-a-time model. This approach can help cater to diverse learning styles and individual needs, and offers numerous benefits.
Benefits of One-Course-at-a-Time Learning:
- Flexible Schedules: Because school runs from 8:45-12:50, students can better manage their time and commitments, allowing for a more balanced lifestyle. This is especially beneficial for students with work, family responsibilities, or other personal commitments.
- One Course at a Time Learning: The one-course-at-a-time structure allows students to focus their learning, which can help with task completion. Students who need more time to master a concept can take it, while those who grasp material quickly can move forward. This personalized pacing reduces stress and promotes deeper understanding.
- Smaller Learning Environment: With a total enrollment around 300 students, Wyn Wood provides students with a smaller and more intimate learning environment. This allows teachers to provide more individualized attention and support to each student.
- Increased Confidence and Motivation: Successfully completing one course builds confidence and momentum, motivating students to continue their studies. This sense of accomplishment can be particularly beneficial for students who have struggled in traditional learning environments.
- Workplace Opportunities: The flexible schedule makes it easier for students to participate in work experience programs, co-op placements, and apprenticeships, gaining valuable real-world skills and experience while earning credits.
At Wyn Wood, students work collaboratively with teachers to develop individualized timelines and learning strategies, ensuring their education aligns with their interests, strengths, and goals. While the learning environment is primarily independent, students receive ample support and guidance from dedicated educators.
Wyn Wood offers the same core curriculum as traditional high schools, with pathways to Workplace, College, and University available to all students. Students can also participate in co-op placements or apprenticeship opportunities, both of which could improve their future employability. Students with paid jobs may be able to connect them to credits as well.
We believe in a collaborative approach, working closely with students, their families, and community supports, to empower students to achieve their goals and aspirations.
Our Students
Students who attend an alternate program are seeking an alternative to the traditional high school setting with a different delivery model. Alternate programs offer students an opportunity to learn at their own pace. Students work on one course at a time, and are able to complete six or more courses in an academic year. The focus is on student-directed learning. Student progress is monitored closely and students are held accountable for their work.
- Students can work towards an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
- Applied, academic, college and university level courses are available.
- Our students range from 16-20 years of age.
- Students benefit from a non-semestered, one course at a time setting.
- Minimum grade 10 level of reading comprehension is recommended.
Successful students attend regularly, complete work and seek assistance, when necessary. Our model works best when students attend daily.
